GCSE English and Functional Skills English Classes

Improve your English skills by attending our friendly but focused Part-time Functional Skills classes and gain a vital qualification which will help you in the world of work and further studies.

GCSE English is required by Higher Education establishments and many employers. If you want to improve your skills, this course will develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and help you to gain that vital qualification.

Should attendance fall below 95%, an alternative course may be more suitable and your tutor will discuss options with you.

The course consists of a variety of texts and series of work packs to help with developing revision skills to prepare you for the summer exams. In preparation for these exams you will familiarise yourself with various different genres of writing that you will be expected to analyse. You will also need to be cognisant with subject terminology and writing techniques as tools to use in that analysis, as well as able to produce a variety of texts in the personal writing elements of the papers.

If it has been a while since you took your GCSEs (or O Levels) you may find you will have to do quite a bit of reading outside of class time.

Functional Skills English will cover:

  • Reading everyday text
  • Instructions, explanations and persuasive text
  • Reading strategies.
  • Sentence and grammar work
  • Vocabulary and word work
  • Speaking and listening
  • Learners may use the qualification to help progress onto further education opportunities such as higher education.
  • Improve your employment prospects.
