Sport

Our enrichment activities are available to all students and are a great way to try new activities, develop skills and meet new people. You don’t need to be on a Sport course to take part in our sport enrichment, so come and join in!

Teams and clubs include Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Dodgeball, Indoor Cricket, Orienteering, Volleyball, Table Tennis and even Zorb Football!

These activities are available during lunch and some compete in AoC League matches every Wednesday afternoon. Students also have an opportunity to
represent the College at the regional and national championships in the sports mentioned above as well as Badminton and running.

Regional championships include competitions against other colleges within the county of Yorkshire and the Humber, while at the National Championships, we compete against other colleges within England.

Frequently asked Q&As:

I cannot train either of the specified days, can I still play?

Yes you can. As long as you demonstrate a commitment to playing every week you will not be refused if you cannot make training sessions.

I get a bus home from College, can I still play?

Yes all home fixtures finish for this time. Sometimes when playing away fixtures we may run slightly over with distance and traffic, so it may be wise to organise a lift just to be safe.

I am not too sure at the moment, should I still express my interest?

Yes please do. When the season draws closer we can contact you to see if you are interested further.

Please contact the Sport Development Officer on Tel 01757 211025 or email roates@heartofyorkshire.ac.uk for more information about joining a team or to enquire about coaching dates.

Annual Sport Awards

Every summer the Sports department celebrates the successes of its Sports teams and individual students at the Sports Awards, which last year were held at Selby Rugby Club.

Sports staff and students took part in a Q&A session with players Chris Green and Joe Westerman from the College’s Rugby League partners Hull FC and enjoyed a formal three-course meal before the presentation of the Awards.

Recent Sporting highlights throughout the year have included student Sophie Dales’ Young Volunteer Award at the Yorkshire Women Volunteer Awards, a number of trips and visits including the Sport European Football Tour which saw 28 Sport students visit PSV Eindhoven FC for coached sessions, as well as the department’s male Futsal team reaching the FA People’s Cup final at St George’s Park. The department also organised a Colour Run in partnership with AoC Sport in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support to encourage more women to take part and enjoy sport.

Selby Football Development Centre

The Selby College Football Development Centre (FDC) provides a platform for players who have previously been involved with professional clubs, as well as those who have yet to be given the opportunity to showcase their sporting talents. With links to local professional and semi-professional clubs, students will have the opportunity to play at the highest level.

Training is incorporated into the study programme each week. Additionally, sports science support is provided alongside the pitch-based sessions.
