Lyndsey Abbott

Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning)

Why did you choose to study at Selby College?

I was already working at Selby College as a Learning Support Practitioner (LSP) when I enquired about studying for my Certificate in Education.

Working as an LSP made me realise how much I enjoyed being a part of the students learning and I wanted to explore how I could progress in this area. I was initially concerned about whether I would be able to train as a teacher, as I had no relevant experience in the area. However, I had 14 years of industry experience in Health and Social Care which I felt could greatly benefit students who wanted to work in this area.

I received excellent advice, reassurance and support from the Teaching and Learning Manager Stacy Vipas. She reaffirmed my own thoughts about how much direct experience I had from working in the industry, in which she commented that I possessed knowledge and skills that many tutors did not have. This guidance and reassurance helped to solidify my decision to study at Selby College.

What do you enjoy the most about your course?

I like the variety of students that have been on my course. It has been really insightful to hear of others' experiences and teaching journeys.

My tutor Stacy and Gabriel Horgan have been extremely helpful. In particular Gabriel, who has been very supportive in helping me progress with my teaching development.

What do you plan to go on to do following your time at College?

I am currently employed by Selby College as a Health and Social Care tutor, however I plan to continue my own professional development and potentially increase my hours within the department.
