BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Exercise Science

Lucy progressed from a Level 3 BTEC Sports Coaching, Development and Fitness course to a Level 3 Sports Massage programme before completing a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Exercise Science degree at Selby College….

Why did you choose to study at Selby College?

The School Liaison team at Selby College visited my high school and spoke to everyone individually about what they wanted to do and presented the different routes that could betaken. I found out about the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Exercise Science course while studying my Level 3 BTEC Sport course. The familiarity of the staff, students, and campus really appealed to me, as well as the smaller class sizes and convenience of living at home.

What did you enjoy the most about your course?

I really enjoyed learning about methods to coach a diverse range of people. I also enjoyed the science side of the course too and learning about the way the body works and adapts. Additionally, the small class size allowed everyone to interact with each other and we all made strong friendships to help each other throughout the course.

What tutor support did you receive during your courses?

Throughout my time at the College, I have been taught by a number of sport tutors who have all helped me in different ways. However, my tutors Gabriel and Carla have had the most impact on me throughout my degree as they provided me with the feedback I needed to get most of my assignments in my third-year up to a first-class standard.

What is your biggest highlight of your time at College?

The independent research project in the third year of my degree course was really enjoyable for me as it allowed me to choose my own topic and research that subject. I also enjoyed studying anatomy and physiology, as well as nutrition, as I personally find these subjects very interesting. Lastly, I enjoyed the coaching modules of the courses as this is an area of interest for me and enabled me to learn the requirements to coach different groups of people.

What have you moved on to following your time at College?

I have been taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme through the Leeds United Foundation. I’ve also got a graduate job as a Sport Graduate Assistant at St Peter’s School in York.

Lucy was awarded the Academic Achievement Award at degree-level and the Manager's Player for Football trophy at Selby College's Sport Awards 2021
