BTEC Extended Diploma, Level 3

Biomedical Science

This course reflects aspects of employment within professional biomedical science professions such as medical laboratory science, paramedic, nursing, midwifery, nutrition, radiology and radiography.

This qualification provides a platform for entry onto Higher Education Science courses. It builds on the knowledge and skills learned at GCSE, extending them to Level 3.

The course will enable you to develop scientific skills in the context of a variety of medical contexts. It is particularly suitable if you prefer portfolio-based assessment.

The mandatory units include:

• Physiology of Human Body Systems

• Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques

• Principles and Applications of Science

• Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Plus, a selection of Biology, Chemistry and Physics units.

On successful completion you may go on to Higher Education or a range of employment opportunities in the Medical Science field.

Standard Level 3 vocational entry requirements apply. The minimum requirement is at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 OR at least 3 GCSE subjects at Grade 4 alongside alternative GCSE equivalent requirements. At least one of Maths or English Language must be Grade 4 and neither lower than Grade 3. For this course you must also have achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE Science. Please note: If you have not achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths you will be required to continue studying these alongside your college course.
