Selby College’s Creative Media Production & Technology students are bringing Selby’s history to life with a documentary exhibition at Selby Abbey, as part of a project with Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone, a project funded by Historic England and North Yorkshire Council.
The Level 3 students have created a range of documentary films which showcase heritage sites across Selby, including The Crescent, Micklegate, Back Micklegate, Finkle Street and New Street.
The documentaries, which are on display at Selby Abbey between Tuesday 28th November until Thursday 30th November, feature interviews with local historians and footage of the historic streets.
Creating a documentary for a community project isn’t something that you’d get to do at high school and so this experience has expanded our experience in film making. From arranging an interview with a local historian, to filming cut-away footage of Micklegate, to editing the footage, we really enjoyed the process of making the documentary and it feels rewarding to see it being shown at Selby Abbey.
Organised by North Yorkshire Council, the exhibition is one of the Council’s community engagement projects which celebrates Selby’s heritage.
We’ve previously worked closely with Selby College and are delighted to have been able to work with its Creative Media Production & Technology students to deliver this project, as we are passionate about sharing heritage with the younger generation. The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between digital and traditional, enabling visitors to experience and enjoy Selby’s heritage in a visual and engaging way.
For the Creative Media Production & Technology students, the module was designed to enable them to explore industry-standard techniques using professional film and editing equipment.
What the students have managed to achieve in only three months of starting the course is incredible and is an aspirational start in their journeys within the media industry. When designing the curriculum for the programme, we wanted the students to experience working with a real-life client, as this would give them invaluable skills in editing, filming and exhibiting, whilst following a brief. Projects like this often don’t get the exposure they deserve, so it’s fantastic to see attendees admiring the pieces at Selby Abbey and the talent of our students.
The Creative Media Production & Technology programme offers learners a great introduction to the media industry, enabling them to develop skills in film editing, animation, print graphics, photography, journalism and more.
As part of the course, learners will explore traditional media such as single and multi-camera techniques but also exciting digital developments such as viral marketing and online applications.
