Sport students at Selby College start the academic year on a high

Sports students at Selby College have been awarded certificates for additional qualifications they have recently achieved as part of their Sports courses - these include Sports Leader UK, Rugby Young Leaders, Volleyball Young Leaders and Emergency First Aid at Work.

As part of their extra qualifications, the College’s students have been working with local primary schools. In the last year this has seen them volunteer and host events at Selby College for over 500 primary school pupils including cross-country, tri-golf, girl’s football, multi-sports, cricket, boccia and curling. Students have also ran events externally including girls-only dodgeball at Selby High School, tennis at Staynor Hall Primary School and the annual school cricket competition at Selby Cricket Club.

Student Matthew Pooley, 18, who has been working and volunteering at Brayton C of E (VC) Primary School since July also received some fantastic feedback following his involvement in their Summer Holiday Camp programme, as well as a number of other school events, teaching PE and recently a PPA (planning, preparation and assessment) teaching role, where he is also delivering an after-school club.

Brayton Primary Teacher Jamie Wheeler said: “Matthew has made a massive impression on not only myself, but also on the whole staff team here, who are always happy to have him work with their class and help out where he can. The children have also thoroughly enjoyed him teaching them.”

Former Selby High School students Matthew and Louis Almond, 17, have also been working with Hambleton FC Juniors for the past year after taking up an opportunity the College offered after they were approached by the club and their lecturers are delighted to have received such glowing feedback from Club and Coach Development Officer Steve Richards.

Steve said: “Matt and Louis have been fantastic, they have committed to every session for the whole season and both are now completing FA Level 1 Coaching courses paid for by the club – they have been a real credit to themselves and to the College.

He added: “They have not only supported the coaching but also taken on responsibilities including team management, pitch improvements and lots of other jobs that come with running a community club.”

More Selby College students have been offered the opportunity to get involved with Hambleton Juniors this season with three different age group teams (U12, U8 and U7), as well as the chance to support match days and get involved in the coordination of the club including fundraising, photography and website management.
