Selby College is celebrating the success of both its A Level and BTEC students today as the Class of 2019 came in to collect their results. It was revealed the students had achieved a fantastic 99.7% A Level pass rate across all subjects.

Additionally, out of the 12 Level 3 Vocational subjects offered at Selby College, students have achieved an amazing 100% overall pass rate.

The Exams team opened the doors to the College’s Sixth Form Academy at 8am this morning for those eagerly awaiting their results. Despite some nervous students on their way in, supported by teaching staff and parents, there were many happy faces, with a number of this year’s leavers heading off to esteemed Russell Group destinations across the UK including Durham University, University of Edinburgh, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Manchester, Newcastle University, University of Nottingham and University of Oxford.

There are also a number of students progressing on to Higher Education at Selby College to study programmes such as HND Art & Design (Arts Practice) and HNC Business, HNC Computing, HND Hair and Beauty Management or the BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching and Exercise Science.

Selby College’s overall top A Level performers were Emily Morbey and Noah Modi.

Emily, formerly of The Holy Family School, achieved triple A* grades in Biology, English Language and Mathematics. She is going on to study Human Sciences at the University of Oxford’s Keble College in the autumn. The top-performing student initially secured a place at the University’s prestigious Summer School last year, which confirmed her dream to study there.

After opening her results and discovering she had secured a place at Oxford, a shocked Emily said: “I’m ecstatic, I was convinced I wasn’t going to get in. It will be such an amazing place to study a course that really interests me. It has been a great experience at Selby College – I’m so grateful for the support of my lecturers!”

Emily is particularly interested in the Genetics and Evolution elements of the course that Oxford offers, following the taster she had of their degree programme last summer.

The keen singer and guitarist added: “I’m definitely going to join the college’s choir!”

Noah Modi, formerly of the Snaith School, performed equally well, achieving triple A* grades in Business Studies, English Literature and Psychology. He will be progressing on to a four-year Business Management Degree Apprenticeship with Greencore from September, and will gain his degree through a partnership with Nottingham Trent University.

Noah said: “I would like to thank all my tutors at Selby College for their support. I’m excited to start my Management training with Greencore and to be working in industry, it’s a great opportunity with great prospects.”

His mum added, “I’m so proud of his achievements, he has worked so hard.”

Other students who achieved top results include Emily’s best friend Kate Settle, formerly of Selby High School, who achieved an A* in Psychology and A grades in Biology and Mathematics. She is going on to Newcastle University to study Psychology. Kate said, “I’m so happy about my results after all the hard work, I can’t believe it! I’m going out for lunch with all our friends to celebrate.”

Ella Moxon, formerly of Selby High School, achieved A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. She is heading to the University of Leeds to study Medical Science in the autumn. Ella commented, “I can’t wait to start the next steps in my career. The teaching staff have been really helpful.”

A Level students at Selby College also have the option of combining traditional A Level subjects with BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate options. Currently for September 2019 entry these courses include Information Technology, Applied Science and Applied Sport. These have the same delivery mode and UCAS points as A Levels but are more coursework based and a different specification than the A Level equivalents.

Madeleine Goodare, formerly of the Holy Family High School, chose to combine her options and achieved an A in Psychology, B in Sociology and a Distinction* in BTEC Applied Law. She is going on to study Criminology at the University of Liverpool. Madeleine said, “I am so relieved to get such great results, I was up all night checking UCAS. I can’t wait to celebrate!”

Madeleine, who has a keen interest in her chosen degree path, and is interested in a possible career in Victim Support said: “The combination of A Levels and a BTEC really worked for me. I’m really sad to leave College as I have loved my time here, I’ll miss seeing all my friends and favourite lecturers every day, but also I’m excited for university!”

A number of our Level 3 students are collecting their final results today following changes in the assessment on their courses to include exam elements in: Applied Science (Jonathan Ellison and Lean Cannon all achieved D*D*D*), Business Studies (Scout Castle, Georgia Tyler and Mia Wilson all achieved D*D*D), Health and Social Care (Holly Howsam, Chloe Taylor-Yates and Abby Waddingham all achieved D*D*D), Sports Studies (Aidan Harding, Millie Kilgar and Connor O’Brien all achieved D*D*D) and Sport & Exercise Science (Aidan Kittridge achieved D*D*D and Georgia Dayes achieved D*D*D*). These full-time vocational courses are equivalent to studying A Levels.
