Selby College student selected to exhibit work at Origins Creative Arts Festival in London

Selby College Media student Jack Howard, 18, has been selected to exhibit his work at Origins Creative Arts Festival taking place at the Truman Brewery at the end of July.

Jack has just completed his second year on the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology at the College. His film submission entitled ‘Jennifer's Song’ caught the attention of UAL Awarding Body’s professional curators, Elliott Burns and Pita Arreola, who had received over 360 submissions for the festival.

Media Lecturer Mike Young said: “We’re really proud of Jack’s submission and the future opportunities that could come out of this for him. The practical UAL course we offer here at Selby offers a great introduction to the media industry and develops the confidence you need to move into this field. Students will learn industry-standard techniques using professional equipment, with a focus on areas including filmmaking, editing, music video, photography and radio.”

The aspiring film director is heading to the Northern Film School at Leeds Beckett University, one of the UK’s best known film and television schools in the autumn to study for a BA (Hons) in Filmmaking, where he will learn how to produce films and develop his creative and technical filmmaking skills in drama, documentary and experimental film production.

Jack’s film submission explores the story of a retired musician, Ronnie Lewis, who the public believe to have murdered his wife, Jennifer. Even his daughter blames him for her death. When the whole world seems to be against him, will Ronnie’s neighbour be able to pull him back into the world of writing music? And can he convince everyone of his innocence before the blame consumes him?

The former Brayton Academy student has already had a taste of the film-making world after spending time on the set of Victoria at the Yorkshire Studios at Church Fenton during his studies. Having a major TV production on Selby College's doorstep has created some fantastic opportunities for the Media department’s students, who have been involved in work experience placements through links with their course tutors. Speaking of his time onset Jack said: “My dream is to become a film director. Visiting and working on Victoria is a step closer to this dream.”

Origins Creative Arts Festival is organised by Awarding Organisation UAL Awarding Body and provides art lovers, critics, industry professionals from the creative sector, the chance to meet original 14-18 creative talent from across the UK.

Origins Creative Arts Festival is a free festival showcasing creative works in Fashion, Performing Arts and Music to Sculpture, Fine Art and Creative Media from some of the UK’s most talented students at schools and Further Education institutions taking pre-degree creative arts subjects.

Origins promises a unique first look at these as-yet-unseen future stars of the creative scene. Open to the public and expected to attract thousands of visitors over the three days, with entertainment on site, the programme includes an awards event to select the top work across each subject area, guest speakers, and performance tie-ins with Barbican Box.

The exhibition is open to the public from Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
