Selby College Relaunches Business Degree to Support Local Professionals

A highly-skilled workforce will play a vital role in helping to recover the UK’s economy following the coronavirus pandemic, says Steve Mulligan, Assistant Director for Higher Education at Selby College.

“Whether you are unemployed, looking to progress in your profession or considering a career change, now is the prime time to do so,” said Steve. “Due to the state of the employment market following the coronavirus pandemic, now presents an opportunity for people to invest in their skills or to build on their education whilst working. This will be vital in ensuring the workforce of tomorrow has the skills and experience they need to help recover our economy following the crisis.”

As a result of this, many businesses are having to evolve their operational and economic conditions to survive the post-Covid recession that the industry is facing. That is why business skills, such as management accounting and operations, entrepreneurship, small business management and innovation and commercialisation, will be vital in helping to create a new way of working in the future, emphasised Stephen.

Selby College’s Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business, a Level 4 programme providing students with a specialist vocational understanding of business, is designed to help students gain strong sector-related skills, enabling them to gain knowledge of key business concepts, whilst simultaneously developing the practical skills necessary for a successful career within the business sector.

Following completion of the course, students can progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) followed by a BA (Hons) top-up degree in Leadership and Management, before going onto a variety of employment opportunities such as project management, HR management, marketing or roles in the retail sector.

The College has adjusted the programme for Autumn 2020 entry to suit working professionals, running the part-time programme over 18 months, with students attending three hours on site one week and a further three hours online the following week.

“No matter what stage you are at in your life, it is never too late to return to education. Our programmes are flexible and vocational in nature, bringing opportunities to you in ways that fit around your life and other commitments,” added Steve.

Selby College’s Higher Education (degree-level) provision was named the ‘Best in Yorkshire’ for Overall Student Satisfaction in the 2019 National Student Survey (NSS). Overall Student Satisfaction came out at 93% for all programmes, which is significantly above the national average of 86%.
