New students welcomed with Freshers’ Week activities

The highlight of a week-long programme of events to welcome all new students at Selby College was Wednesday’s Freshers’ Fair when the Abbot’s Road campus was transformed into a Freshers’ Fairground for the afternoon!

The lunchtime event saw everyone from students to staff having a go on the traditional Fairground stalls including ‘Hook a Duck’ and ‘High Striker’, not forgetting the challenge of the Rodeo Bull, Giant Buzz Wire and Gladiator Jousting on the mound - which even had Selby College Principal Phil Sayles taking on Director of Estates Mark Gent! Students were able to enjoy popcorn and candy floss and a return visit from LoubyLou's ice cream van.

The local business and support service stands in the Jubilee Building included DW Fitness First Selby, Selby Leisure Centre, Yorkshire Bank and Arriva, alongside the College’s support teams. Domino’s Pizza were also in attendance handing out pizza slices!

After the Freshers’ Fair, the Sports Department held its Sports Trials for Men’s and Women’s Football, Rugby and Netball on the playing fields and in the Sports Hall. The department also ran a Bubble Football lunchtime session earlier in the week, as well as tasters by Hospitality & Catering and Hair & Beauty, and sign-ups for clubs including Computing and Sport.

Throughout the week the Student Admin Help Desk was available for queries about transport and bursary, as well as Careers Advice from the College’s specialist advisors.

To sign up for a Sports Club visit the Sports Office in the Jubilee Building, alternatively contact Sport Development Officer Matthew Duck on Tel 01757 211025 or email duckm@aselby.ac.uk.
