Hospitality & Catering Bake-Off Stars raise over £500 for Breast Cancer Charity

Selby College’s Level 2 Hospitality & Catering students and staff organised their annual ‘Great Selby College Bake-Off’ back in May, this time choosing to raise awareness for Secondary1st, a breast cancer charity close to the hearts of the department.

At a recent cheque presentation attended by Selby College Principal & Chief Executive Phil Sayles, the department’s staff and students were delighted to announce that the combined total from the bake-off and raffle had raised an amazing £528.40!

Student Holly Lee took the lead on the bake-off and thanks to everyone’s efforts, the event was a huge success with a large number of home-baked goods brought in by staff and students from across the College competing for the title of Best Large Cake and Best Tray Bake. The standard of entries this year was very high as entrants battled for the top spots, with even the Principal getting involved and baking a batch of Brownies! After the judging was complete, the cakes were sold off in the Training Restaurant to raise money for the charity.

The charity said of the donation: “Secondary1st is so grateful to the students of Selby College who held a bake-off and raffle to raise funds for vital research into secondary breast cancer. This is cancer that has spread from the breast to other vital organs in the body and there is currently no cure; secondary breast cancer kills nearly 1,000 women each month in the UK. This donation is hugely appreciated and will definitely help to raise awareness of secondary breast cancer. Thank you to all the students and staff at Selby College for all their efforts and hard work.’’

Principal Phil Sayles added: “I would like to thank the Hospitality & Catering students and staff for the tremendous effort they have put in to the ‘Great Selby College Bake-Off’ and raffle. This is the largest amount raised by the bake-off so far, so well done to you all. A special thank you goes to Holly who took the lead on this event and even took raffle tickets to her part-time employment which helped raise the total considerably.”
