Art & Design students prepare for End-of-Year Exhibition

Wednesday 25 May 2022

Art & Design students at Selby College are gearing up to deliver their end of year exhibition, which will feature projects with Selby District Council.

Taking place from Thursday June 16th until Thursday 23rd June 2022, at the College’s campus and Selby Abbey, the exhibition will give A Level, Vocational and Higher Education Art & Design students a chance to showcase their final projects which will later be graded.

Featuring a range of student artwork, the pieces on display will include illustrations, textiles, interior design, graphic communications, photography, fine art and more.

I’m really looking forward to displaying my artwork alongside my fellow classmates. The concept behind my piece is raising awareness of mental health and the social mask it creates. I’ve spent a lot of months creating the work, but it will all be worth it once I can see it projected within Selby Abbey as part of the exhibition. This was going to be my final Art & Design exhibition at the College, although I am now going to be returning to complete my full degree next year at the College.

The micro-commissions developed by four Higher Education Art & Design students for the Selby Station Gateway Transforming Cities Fund project will also be showcased for the first-time as part of the exhibition.

The artwork will include a large textile piece of Selby District’s land and transport routes, design concepts for the bandstand in Selby Abbey, a colourful piece which engages with the cultural diversity of the town and a short film which highlights how jobs and industries have changed in the area.

Following a successful bidding process, students Hannah Knight, Jared Robinson, Joseph Linford and Paulina Cybartowska each received £500 from Selby District Council to create their proposals for a temporary piece of artwork.

We are thrilled to be hosting the College’s End-of-Year Art & Design Exhibition for another year at Selby Abbey. As always, there will be some fantastic talent on display and I’m pleased that the aspiring artists and designers are able to use the Abbey as a space to share their work with the local community.

To mark the opening of the exhibition on Thursday 16th June, the Art & Design department will be hosting a launch event between 6pm-8pm, with the first hour taking place at Selby College’s campus until 7pm and the final hour at Selby Abbey.

Refreshments will be available at the College and transport will be available to take attendees to and from Selby Abbey.

The exhibition will be open from 10am until 4pm every day at Selby Abbey and between 9:30am-4:30pm on weekdays at Selby College. Attendees of the College’s Open Event on Monday 20th June, between 5:30-7:30pm, will also be able to explore the exhibition on campus.

This year’s End-of-Year exhibition will be particularly special as features artwork by students from our Level 3 Art & Design course right up to our Higher National Diploma programme, as well as the pieces which were awarded funding from Selby District Council’s Arts and Cultural Officer, Yvette Turnbull. The work on display really highlights the students’ individual creative flair and how they are coming into their own as artists, which is fantastic to see. The showcase will also coincide with the College’s Open Event, which is the perfect opportunity to show prospective students what they can achieve within the Art & Design industry at Selby College.

The Art & Design department has recently expanded its course offering to include a brand-new Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design and a BA (Hons) Top-Up degree in Art & Design, ensuring students can progress right through from a Level 2 qualification to a full degree - enabling them to ultimately secure employment within the creative industry.
