Art & Design students gear up for exhibition at Selby Abbey

Wednesday 26 May 2021

Higher Education Art & Design students at Selby College are preparing to launch their first in-person exhibition this year at Selby Abbey.

The display, which will take place from Tuesday, 15th June until Tuesday, 22nd June 2021, will feature work from both Year 1 and Year 2 Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/D) Art & Design students at the College.

Year 2 HND artwork will include illustrated and animated fashion photography which will be projected from above within the Abbey. Media based work will also be on display including old portable TVs investigating 80’s propaganda, as well as pieces that look at nature and the environmental effects of opening up the airways.

The show will include artwork created by Year 1 HNC students for The Escapologist UK to promote its escape rooms in Selby, Castleford, Leeds and its brand-new venue in Manchester.

The students have been working with the owner of The Escapologist to create potential new themes and games for its escape rooms through fine art, digital graphics and photography. They have also been learning how to produce marketing material, create moving idents and merchandise to help advertise The Escapologist’s bars and restaurants.

“Despite the challenges this past year has presented, our students have worked extremely hard to create some fantastic pieces. They have thrown themselves into their project work and have been able to bring concepts to life through fine art, photograph and graphic design. I’m so pleased that they are finally able to showcase their work as part of a real-life exhibition and that the people of Selby can see first-hand what talented artists they are.”

Following the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, this marks the Art & Design department’s first in person exhibition since the pandemic began. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the department’s shows at Selby Abbey in June 2020 and January 2021 had to be cancelled.

To overcome this, students created their own online display where attendees used Virtual Reality (VR) glasses to walk around the exhibition. They were able to explore the students’ work, including illustration, 3D architectural designs, painting, drawing and new media works.

The Art & Design (Arts Practice) programme at Selby College is a two-year degree level programme which provides students with a specialist vocational grounding in Art & Design. Building on previous Level 3 knowledge and skills in Art & Design, the course is structured to provide opportunities across a broad academic and vocational base, deepening students’ knowledge and skills and preparing them for a successful career in the industry.
