A Level students delve into Global Warming on a trip to The Deep

Last month, a group of Selby College’s A Level Biology and Geography students headed out on a trip to The Deep in Hull, most well known as one of the UK's most spectacular aquariums, with over 3500 fish - but it also operates as an education and conservation charity and more recently, an international player in marine conservation working on pioneering research schemes to protect the future of our oceans.

The students had a very informative and though-provoking visit learning about the impact of rising carbon dioxide levels on marine life and habitats. The workshop they attended ‘Global Warming - Ocean Acidification’ looked at the effects of man's impact on the oceans over time, specifically the problems caused by increasing levels of carbon dioxide. They engaged in practical investigations to explain the science behind ocean acidification and also took a closer look at the problems for our own seas. The group also took part in interactive quizzes to assess their own knowledge.

Lecturer in Biology, Kirsty Butterworth said: “It was a really interesting visit and opened all of our eyes to the problems of global warming.”

She added: “We also got the opportunity to enjoy the aquarium and managed to squeeze in some hands-on (literally!) experiences with starfish and sea anemones, as well as watching the divers feed the sharks – we had a fantastic day!”
