Equality & Diversity

Equality and Diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment, is at the heart of everything that we do and is an underlying theme within our strategic directions and values. We believe that equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment is key to ensuring that we meet the needs of our current and potential stakeholders so we can provide services that are accessible and relevant to their needs.

Selby College is committed to taking positive steps to help redress the effects of discrimination and disadvantage, ensuring that equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment are integral to all our activities and are a part of everything that we do. To demonstrate this commitment, we have strategies and actions in place that outline our commitment and targets on how we aim to drive the equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment agenda forward.

Equality and Diversity Statement

Selby College welcomes and celebrates Equality and Diversity. We believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly, regardless of their age, disability, gender, gender identity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and socio-economic background. We seek to ensure that no member of the college community receives less favourable treatment on any of these grounds which cannot be shown to be justified.

Through our Single Equality Scheme, we will tackle discrimination; promote equality of opportunity and good relations between all people. Selby College is committed to providing services that promote equality, value diversity and community cohesion and strives to ensure that everyone in college is treated with respect and dignity.

Our Commitment

Equality and Diversity is more than just meeting legal obligations, or targets. It's about making a difference to the lives of the people we serve, treating all people with dignity and respect, and recognising the value of each individual. This means an on-going commitment to ensuring that our services meet the varied and individual needs of the staff and learners in our college.

We will:

  • make sure that our employment practices are fair and promote equality;
  • continue to take positive action to address any under representation in the staff, student and Corporation profile;
  • tackle any gaps in the success, retention or achievement rates for any equality groups;
  • work to eliminate any barriers that might inhibit the success or progression of any groups of staff or students;
  • ensure all documents including policies and procedures are accessible in different formats;
  • actively celebrate the rich diversity of our staff, learners and the communities they belong to.

Anti-Bullying & Anti-Harassment Statement

Selby College recognises that the safety and well-being of its staff and learners is central to successful learning. Selby College is therefore committed to creating and maintaining a working and learning environment that is safe and secure, free from any form of harassment or bullying, for all staff and learners.

Selby College recognises that without such a commitment, any individual, through no fault of their own, could be subjected to such unacceptable behaviour.

As harassment or bullying is unacceptable behaviour at Selby College and will not be tolerated, any proven instances of either will be treated as instances of misconduct or gross misconduct under the appropriate college disciplinary procedure.
