BTEC Extended Diploma, Level 3

Health & Social Care

If you want a career in the Health & Social Care sector, this is the course for you!

This is a rewarding and challenging course that prepares you for a career working in the Health & Social Care sector. The course will equip you with the knowledge, skills, understanding and attributes to work in the Health & Social Care sector. You will also complete a work placement in the sector to support the development of essential skills such as communication, problem solving and teamwork.

You will study eight mandatory units as part of your course:

- Human Lifespan Development (Externally Assessed)
- Working in Health & Social Care (Externally Assessed)
- Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Social Care
- Enquiries into Current Research in Health & Social Care
- Meeting Individual Care & Support Needs
- Work Experience in Health & Social Care
- Principles of Safe Practice in Health & Social Care
- Promoting Public Health

You will also study five optional units that will be discussed throughout your course. These are subject to change each year, but may include:

- Infection Prevention & Control
- Sociological Perspectives
- Psychological Perspectives
- Caring for Individuals with Dementia
- Policy in Health & Social Care
- Nutritional Health
- Understanding Mental Wellbeing
- Assessing Children’s Development Support Needs
- Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs

This course is equivalent to three A Levels. You will be fully equipped to move into further study in a range of Health and Social Care degree programmes, higher level apprenticeships or employment.

Students have progressed to University to undertake degrees in Health and Social Care related topics such as: Adult, Child and Mental Health Nursing, Psychology, Health and Well-being, Youth and Family working, Social work, Diagnostic Radiography, Midwifery, Nursing, Community Development, Operating Department Practitioner and Podiatry.

Potential Careers

This course may support progression into a wide range of job roles in the health and social care sector, including Care Support Workers in residential settings, Healthcare Assistants in Community, Primary Care and Acute Health Environments, Care Support Workers in Domiciliary Services, Care within Supported Living or Day Services Community-Based Support Workers, Nursing Associate roles and apprenticeship roles in dental nursing, pharmacy and social work.

You will need 5 GCSE’s Grade 4-9, including English, Maths and Science.

The qualification is assessed through a range of methods
including:
• Internally set and assessed units.
• Externally set and
assessed units (these are examinations and synoptic assessments).
