Selby College Achieves Huge ‘A’ Level Passes

As Selby College enters its 25th year, Sixth Form students at the top-performing North Yorkshire college proved they were top of the class after recording a huge 98.7% overall ‘A’ Level pass rate.

    Since the college first opened in 1984, exam results have shot up dramatically each year and 2009 is no exception with the college achieving a 100% pass rate in 18 ‘A’ Level subjects and cementing its place in the top ten percent of Further Education Colleges nationally.

    Principal, Allan Stewart OBE, praised the efforts of all those involved in the ‘A’ Level programme saying; “Results Day at Selby College is a day when we celebrate the achievements and hard work of both our students and our staff. I am therefore thrilled once again to report how successful Selby College students have been, achieving an overall 98.7% A Level pass rate; they have excelled themselves individually and can be justly proud of the grades they have achieved.”

    Allan added; “Selby College’s consistently high exam pass rates are a key reason why we have seen student applications rise dramatically. As competition for university places increases, more students will be looking to top performing colleges, like Selby College, to help them achieve the high grades they will need to succeed.”

  • A sentiment echoed by Chair of Governors, Vernon Wells, who said; “Governors are delighted to celebrate the success of our students and to congratulate each and every one of them. We were particularly pleased to see the number of students achieving A-C grades had risen by 5% over the previous year.”

    Vernon continued; “As this is Selby College’s 25th anniversary year, we would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Principal and all of the staff at the college, who work tirelessly to ensure the students reach such high standards of achievements, ensuring also Selby College maintains its position as One of England’s Top Performing Colleges.”

  • Some of this year’s top ‘A’ Level students at the award-winning college were:

    Thomas Green, from Selby, the top-performing Selby College student achieved an impressive four ‘A’ grades in Business Studies, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Thomas, who will now go on to study Physics at Warwick University, put his achievement down to hard work and lots of support he said; “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Selby College, it’s been tough at times but the tutors have been great and I’m just glad I didn’t let them down.”

    Luke Parry, from Eastrington, achieved a complete set of four ‘A’ grades in Computing, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Luke, who is currently travelling around Europe and hopes to return to study Mathematical Engineering at Warwick University said; “I chose Selby College because I knew it had a reputation for achieving good exam results and I wanted to get a head start for university. Thanks to the help and support I received from the staff at Selby College I’m now one step nearer to my degree.”

  • Sally Medley, from Howden, achieved ‘A’ grades in English Literature, English Language and two ‘B’ grades in History and Law. Sally said; “Selby College is a great place to learn, everyone’s so friendly and the tutors are really helpful, I couldn’t have achieved these grades without them.” Sally will now go on to study History at Exeter University.

    Bethany Hartshorne, from Hemingbrough, achieved grade A’s in English Language and Literature and Sociology, a ‘C’ grade in Biology and a further ‘A’ grade in her ‘AS’ Level Psychology. Bethany who now plans to take a year out before starting an English degree at Loughborough University next year said; “Waiting for my ‘A’ Level results has been so nerve wracking. I’m really pleased with my results, I couldn’t have done with out help of the tutors at Selby College, I’m so thankful for their support.”

  • It wasn’t just ‘A’ Level students who excelled in this year’s exams, ‘AS’ Level students recorded a 5% increase on last year with more students than ever achieving the top A-C grades.

    Some of this year’s top ‘AS’ Level achievers were:
    Luke Swithenbank, from Selby, achieved an outstanding five grade A’s in Biology, Chemistry, French, History and Mathematics.

    Elizabeth Middleton, from Selby, achieved four grade A’s in English Literature, German, History and Mathematics.

    Robert Lees, from Cliffe, achieved four grade A’s in Accounting, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics
     

    And Hannah Roddie, from Selby, took the first steps toward following in her brother Sam’s footsteps after achieving straight A’s in he AS Level Biology, Chemistry, Geography, and Mathematics. Sam achieved straight A’s in his ‘A’ Levels last year and is currently studying Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University.
