Selby College Awarded £26m New Building Investment
In August 2007, managers and staff of ‘league table topping’ Selby College received news that their £32m new campus vision would become a reality, when they learned they had been awarded a Learning and Skills Council grant to provide the South Selby Campus with two new state-of-the-art buildings that will complete the re-development of the whole college campus by 2010.
This news follows the recent construction of the £4m Academy and £2.5m Renaissance Buildings, both of which were completed to timescale and budget.
Massive New Teaching Block
The college is currently finalising plans with architects on the development of two new college buildings that will comprise a massive teaching block, incorporating more subject specific teaching rooms (equipped the very latest whiteboard, visual aid and ICT technologies) a new Reception area, Refectory, Teaching Kitchen, Restaurant and Hair and Beauty Salon. This two storey project will also provide science laboratories, recreational sports facilities and more social facilities for students.
The new building’s open area floor space has been purposely designed to support a range of college activities throughout the year including; fashion shows, drama productions, exhibitions and displays and both informal and formal meeting areas.
Specialist Engineering and Construction Block
A further new building will comprise a two storey purpose-built construction, engineering and media studies facility and will be built to be a flexible space designed to accommodate changes in the numbers of learners and the types of courses they will want now and in future.
Environmentally Friendly
As part of the design work, the architects have taken into consideration the views of students and staff in providing environmentally friendly facilities that make use of renewable energy sources where possible, including the use of solar collectors, low energy lighting and natural ventilation.
