Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements – What do you need?

Entry requirements are a guide to the general level of qualifications you would expect to have in order to be successful on a particular course, though each application will be dealt with on its merits. So what are the general requirements?

Higher Level Courses
To begin a Higher Level course you would normally be expected to have ‘A’ Level qualifications.

Advanced Level Courses
To begin an Advanced Level course you would normally be expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.

Intermediate Level Courses
To begin an Intermediate Level course you would normally be expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade D.

Foundation Level Courses
To begin a Foundation Level course you would have completed a GCSE programme and be keen to continue to learn.

Entry Level Courses
Entry Level courses require no formal qualification but may be subject to interview.

Are They Exact?
No. They are a guide to help you decide what level of course you should be considering. Generally, you would expect to move to the next level above the level you attained at school.
(E.g. Foundation Level is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade D, so if you received these at school, you should expect to enrol on Intermediate Level courses at Selby College. Intermediate Level is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grade C and if you received these kind of results you would expect to move on to an Advanced Level course and so on).

Will I Need to Pass Certain GCSE Subjects?
These are general requirements to give you an idea of where to start. Some courses will require different skills, for example ‘A’ Levels generally need an intensive level of study and in some cases individual subjects need certain grades at GCSE. BTEC National Diploma courses require slightly different skills and in some cases may only require 4 GCSEs at grade C.
You should obtain course leaflets (available from Student Services contact 01757 211040) and come and talk to staff at our Open Evenings to find out which course suits you. After you have made an application, you will have a discussion with our trained Student Services staff who will be able to advise you about the best course for your requirements and for your success.

What happens if I don’t get the grades?
Selby College offers a range of courses at different levels. Our Student Services advisers will help you to choose a suitable course to help you progress. Whichever level you start at, it is possible, if you achieve well, to progress to a course at the next level.
