Fees and Funding

Fees and Funding

If you are studying a part-time Higher Education course, you can apply for a non-repayable Fee Grant and Course Grant to help pay for tuition
fees and other costs related to your course.

Fee Grant and Course Grant
If you are a part time Higher Education student, you may be able to receive a Fee Grant and a Course Grant. And what’s more you do not have to repay this financial support.
The Fee Grant can help pay for your tuition fees. The Course Grant can help pay for other study costs such as books, materials and travel.
Universities or colleges decide how much the tuition fees are for Part-time courses, there is not a minimum or maximum amount. If you receive a Fee Grant that does not cover the fees charged to you, you may be able to get extra money from Selby College through the Additional Fee Support Scheme.
Part-time students may also be able to get help from the Access to Learning Fund.

Do you qualify?

To apply for the Fee and Course Grants, you and your course must be ‘eligible’. For Part-time study, this means your course must:

  • Last at least one year
  • Not take more than twice as long to complete as an equivalent full-time course
You won’t qualify for the Fee or Course Grant:
  • If you already have a Degree from a UK university or college.
  • If you are studying a Part-time course for Initial Teacher Training (you will apply for the same type of student finance as full time students) for more than one Part-time course at a time.

How much support is available?
Fee Grant
The maximum amount of Fee Grant available depends on the ‘intensity’ of your course.  ‘Intensity’ means how long it takes to complete your course compared with an equivalent Part-time course. For example, if a three year Full-time course
takes six years to complete Part-time, then the Part-time course has an intensity of 50 per cent.

Course Grant
The maximum amount of Course Grant available in 2007/08 is £250.00 a year, no matter what the intensity of your course.

How much will I receive?

How much Fee and Course Grant you can receive each year also depends on your household income and whether you have a partner or children.
For a single, independent student with no children, the table below indicates how much Fee and Course Grant you could get in 2007/08.
If you have a husband, wife, partner or children, then these levels of household income for work out your entitlement rise by:
  • £2,000 for your eldest dependant child
  • £1,000 for each further dependant child
  • £2,000 if you are married, in a civil partnership or live with a partner
There are different rules about counting partners’ income depending on when you started your course.

Fact: Women in the UK have the third highest level of completed education in the EU, falling just behind Sweden and Denmark.
