Every Student Matters

Every Student Matters

Selby College fully supports the new Government initiative ‘Every Child Matters’. The thinking behind Every Child Matters is not new for a successful college like Selby College. A combination of high expectations, innovative thinking and a broad view of supporting young people are all key objectives for the organisation, and something we are proud to be associated with.

Every Child Matters: Change for Children is a new approach to the well being of children and young people from birth to age 19. The Government’s aim is for every child or young person, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they
need to:

  • Be Healthy, so that they are physically healthy, mentally and emotionally healthy, have healthy lifestyles; choose not to take illegal drugs.
  • Staying Safe, so that they are safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation; safe from accidental injury and death; safe from bullying and discrimination; safe from crime and anti-social behaviour in and out of school; have security and stability and are cared for.
  • Enjoying and Achieving, so that they are ready for college; attend and enjoy college; achieve stretching national education standards; achieve personal and social development and enjoy recreation.
  • Making a Positive Contribution, so that they engage in decision-making and support the community and environment; engage in law-abiding and positive behaviour in and out of college; develop positive relationships and choose not to bully or discriminate; develop self-confidence and deal with significant life changes.
  • Achieving Well Being, so that they engage in further education or training on leaving school; are ready for employment; live in decent homes and sustainable communities; have access to transport and material goods; live in households free from low income.
Our goal in supporting this important initiative is to ensure that all young people coming to college are protected from harm and also are helped to achieve what they want from life. We are conscious that our learners have an opinion and have far more to say about issues that affect them as individuals and collectively. That is why we are keen to hear the views of our learner population as individuals or through representation via the Selby College Students’ Union. At Selby College you matter.
