What is the course about?

This course has been designed to provide an opportunity for people looking to pursue careers within sport and exercise professions. The programme has been tailored to provide students with a wide variety of skills to equip them with the knowledge and understanding needed to succeed within sport and exercise training careers.
 
The programme includes practical, academic and work based modules, with students expected to undertake about 17 hours course related work per week. * Subject to confirmation
 
Course Structure 
This full time programme is delivered at Selby College in partnership with the University of Hull* and results in the award of FdSc. To complete the foundation degree programme students will undertake twelve modules over two years. * Subject to confirmation
 
Entry Requirements
Applicants will possess a relevant Level 3 qualification, or be able to show suitable equivalent personal life experience.  All applications will be considered on a individual basis through an interview process.
Mature students are welcome and applications shall be considered with regard to previous qualifications, work experience and personal interests and skills.
 
What will I study?
During the two year course students will undertake the following modules:
 
Year One modules
  • INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODS
  • SPORT AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
  • BIOMECHANICS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT
  • SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGY
  • COACHING METHODS  (Work Based Learning)
  • NUTRITION FOR SPORTS PERFORMANCE
Year Two Modules
  • PHYSIOLOGY – TRAINING THEORY
  • RESEARCH METHODS
  • ELITE COACHING METHODS (Work Based Learning)
  • VOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • ETHICS AND VALUES
  • RESEARCH PROJECT (Students’ Choice)
Learning Methods
Assessment is based on a mixture of assignments, case studies, reflective practice, research and problem solving tasks. Students will be expected to give presentations and take part in group work activities. The ability to relate evidence based theory into practice will be tested throughout the programme.
 
Assessment Methods
Assessment methods on the course will include assignment writing, practical based examinations, presentations, work placement journal and examinations.
 
Fieldwork/Practical Experience
The course will require all students to participate in fieldwork and practical activities as both coach and subjects. Students will take part in a wide variety of sports and exercise sessions as a requirement of the assessment methods.
 
Progression Routes
Upon successful completion of the programme students can progress into careers within either sport or exercise professions. Students will also be given the opportunity to access the one year top-up programme at Doncaster College to take their foundation degree to the level of BSC in Sports Coaching.
