Selby College Apprentice Aimee Payne showed local MP Nigel Adams the ropes as he went ‘back to the floor’ to get hands-on experience of life as an Apprentice.
During his visit to Estate Agent's William H Brown, the Selby and Ainsty MP was shown how to operate the phone system to highlight this year's National Apprenticeship Week (6-10 February 2012) and raise awareness of the value Apprentices bring to businesses.
"I think this is a great initiative. It takes me back to when I left school and found myself in an office job, in the days before I started by own business, getting real world experience."
He added; "Engaging with the public is important for anyone wanting to go into business. Aimee has obviously taken to it like a duck to water and looks to have a bright future ahead of her."
Selby College has long championed the Apprenticeship programme and currently boasts 106 Apprentices aged 16-24 year old in Selby and the surrounding area. Director of Curriculum Liz Ridley said; "Apprenticeships have a very important role to play in training young people in the skills needed for the future of the economy."
She added; "Apprenticeships are not an easy option. The Apprentice has to prove themselves in a full time job as well as completing a range of qualifications. They help equip them with the relevant skills and knowledge to get ahead of the competition and in fact the vast majority secure permanent full time employment at the end of their programme."
So what did Aimee think of Nigel's efforts? Well it seems that if Mr Adams ever wants to quit Parliament he's got a job waiting for him as Aimee said; "He'll make a great administrator, I'd employ him any day. When I've got my own Estate Agency, Nigel's my administrator!"
