Age no Barrier to Learning

Published on: Monday 23 Jan, 2012

A grandmother from Sherburn in Elmet is proving that age really is no barrier to learning after gaining a literacy qualification at the award-winning Selby College.

Marjorie Beal, 74, left school at 15 after being refused the opportunity to sit the Grammar School examination because of her poor spelling, she said; "I can read, but I've always struggled to write things down and spell them, that's why I decided to come to Selby College to see what I could do about it".

Having enrolled on the Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy, Marjorie was identified as having dyslexia and finally, after all these years, was able to learn new techniques to enable her to overcome her difficulties. She said; "I'm very proud of myself, this is the first certificate I've ever achieved.  I was the oldest person on the course by a long way, but it didn't matter we all got on really well and I found it really enjoyable. It just goes to show you never stop learning!"

Marjorie, who is also studying for her Level 1 Certificate in Adult Numeracy, now hopes to further her literacy studies with the Level 2 course.
