Why is Equality & Diversity, Anti-Bullying & Anti-Harassment so important?

This section explains the rationale behind the importance Selby College places on equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment.

Equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment is ecoming more important in all aspects of our lives and work for a number of reasons:

• We live in an increasingly diverse society and need to be able to respond appropriately and sensitively to this diversity. Learners at Selby College reflect this diversity around gender, race and ethnicity, disability, religion, sexuality, class and age.
• Selby College believes that successful implementation of equality and diversity, anti-bullying and anti-harassment in all aspects of life, ensures that staff and students are valued, motivated and treated fairly.
• Selby College treats all learners as individuals and responds to them in an individual manner.
• Understanding that treating all people fairly does not mean treating people in the same way, we need to recognise difference and respond appropriately.
• Respect all regardless of their protected characteristic.
• Increase our knowledge and understanding of aspects of social identity that may be different from our own.
• Avoid stereotyping or making assumptions about people based on their social identity.

Selby College has been awarded the disability two ticks symbol

The two ticks disability accreditation is awarded to employers who demonstrate to the Department of Work and Pensions that they have achieved, and are committed to, continually achieving commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled people.

In applying to be awarded the symbol, Selby College wishes to demonstrate its commitment to becoming more disability confident and to work within a recognised framework to achieve its disability equality objectives.
