About us

Selby College has an active and exciting approach to equality and diversity, witnessed on a daily basis, through the curriculum and the Equality & Diversity Steering Group chaired by Allan Stewart - Principal and comprises of key stakeholders including staff, the nominated Student Union and Staff Governor for Equality and Diversity and external community groups. 

Selby College has a comprehensive Single Equality Scheme, Equality and Diversity Policy and Equality Impact Assessment framework. Diversity is celebrated on a regular basis throughout the College.

Selby College is committed to diversity and equality of opportunity. The aim is to create an environment in which people treat each other with mutual respect, regardless of age, disability, family responsibility, marital status, race, colour, ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender identity, transgender, sexual orientation, trade union activity, unrelated criminal convictions or any other type of discrimination.

To support the above only Selby College's application forms are accepted for vacancies at the College. The application form is in two parts. The first part being the Personal Details page, which is discarded for shortlisting purposes, to ensure a blind shortlisting process takes place. The second part of the application is used for shortlisting. This contains no personal details or cultural background information.

Information on building/venue accessibility

Since 1991 the Building Regulations have required that new buildings are provided with suitable access to and into the building, and that there are suitable facilities within the building. The Building Regulations promote the principle of Access for All. All buildings also comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

As Selby College(Abbot's Road campus)  is a new purpose built College, all Selby College buildings have been designed to be suitable for:

• Disabled customers and visitors
• Friends and families accompanying disabled people
• Parents with pushchairs
• Parents with young children
• People who do not consider themselves to be disabled, but for whom easier access makes getting about less of a problem

All Selby College buildings are designed and built in accordance with British Standard including:

• Car parking at Abbot's Road campus includes spaces for disabled drivers.
• Access to the buildings - Level or stepped and ramped approaches are available to all buildings. The footpaths and street furniture are designed to aid safe passage for visually impaired people.
• Access into the building - Minimum door widths and automatic doors to most buildings are available.
• Getting about the building - Minimum corridor widths; door widths; stairs; accessible lifts; the reception desk has a wheelchair accessible section. Emergency Evacuation Plans and equipment are in place to assist disabled people in the event of fire alarm activation.
• Sanitary accommodation - Sufficient numbers; size; layout; availability; showers and changing facilities including a ground floor fully accessible combined toilet and changing room with mobile hoist and adjustable height bed.
• Other facilities - Kitchens; adjustable height kitchen units within our independent living classroom.
• Hearing and visual aids to communication, including fixed and mobile infra-red hearing loops - Lighting levels; position of signage.
